Founded in 2020 by Rui Miguel Monteiro, R3M Studio Ltd is a multidisciplinary architectural practice operating at the intersection of spatial design, research, and cultural production. The studio engages in collaborative work with students, designers, architects, building contractors, environmentalists, artists, curators, actors, and musicians, situating design and architecture within a broader field of social, artistic, and environmental inquiry.
Born in Portugal to African parents and trained in scenic design, interior design, and architecture, Rui's international experience—having lived and worked in China, Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom—has shaped a cross-cultural design approach inspired by informal urban settings and socially embedded spatial practices.
Rui’s areas of interest include African history and diasporic narratives, Soviet Brutalism and its emphasis on functionalism and sculptural expressiveness, traditional Chinese furniture and material culture, Nordic modularity and systems-based design, adaptive reuse and the transformation of historic buildings, the experimental legacy of the Japanese Metabolist movement, and vernacular architectural traditions.
Raised in a deprived Afro-Portuguese community, Rui’s work is shaped by a critical awareness of spatial inequality and the role of architecture and design in mediating social relations. Alongside his practice, Rui conducts research on the relationship between rapid urbanisation and sustainability, and how the desertification of already-built environments can limit social mobility and lead to community fragmentation.
"I've had the opportunity to collaborate and share experiences with people from different cultures, with whom I've worked on diverse assignments. Each project was and is a unique challenge, but also an opportunity to continuously evolve and thrive"
Rui Miguel Monteiro, Founder
