As part of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland Festival of Architecture, we delivered a month-long programme of creative workshops for Primary 7 pupils in Edinburgh. These hands-on sessions invited school groups and families to explore and reimagine the city’s unique built environment through learning, designing, and making.
Each workshop began with an introduction to the rich history of Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town. Through discussion and exploration, participants developed an understanding of how the city has evolved and what makes its architecture so distinctive.
Children were then challenged to become architects themselves—developing their own ideas for one part of the city. Using a range of materials, they designed and built models that reflected their creativity, problem-solving skills, and imagination.
Across the month, individual designs were brought together into a growing model of a reimagined Edinburgh. This evolving installation culminated in a public exhibition, where participants could see their work alongside others and experience how individual contributions shape the wider built environment.
Alongside weekday school visits, weekend drop-in sessions welcomed families to take part, making the programme accessible to a wider audience.
